Chapter 18

Queen Takes Knight

They walked back through the grounds and made their way to Tower Six, where General Ignatius had his quarters. Lysander, who’d always stayed in military barracks while growing up, roomed with the Aurium instructors in the corridor to Tower Four, but often visited his father in the evenings. He assured Kira that his father had gone to attend a dinner hosted by Mayor Julius and would not return until that night.

“He hates all that stuff, but he feels like he has to attend the official events in order to keep the Ragondians happy. Especially Mayor Julius, seeing as we’re in his city.”

“In what way are his quarters arranged?” Kira asked. “A whole tower to himself seems to be a lot of space for one man, though I suppose he is the head of the Aurium.”

“His bedroom is on the top floor, and under that is a small kitchen and a receiving room where he meets with his top staff most evenings and hosts whatever Ragondian dignitaries come to visit,” Lysander explained as they walked down the corridor to the tower. “Right here on the ground floor is where he has his private study. All his special books and things are in there.”

“How will we get in? Is it unlocked?” Kira asked, and Lysander flashed her one of his mischievous grins.

“I actually figured this out a while ago, out of sheer boredom at a reception for Mayor Julius. So, the door to the study is programmed to open only for my father, right? But the reception room upstairs opens for all Aurium, and there’s a serving lift in there that goes down to the study—I guess it’s in case my father wants to take his dinner in there some evenings, so they can cook it and send it down without disturbing him.”

“So, how does that help us?” Kira asked, bemused.

“You’ll see,” Lysander said. They mounted the stairs to the second floor and Lysander placed his palm on the tech panel there. The door slid open and they entered the reception room, which was a somewhat stiff, functional space, considering it was for entertaining. Several small tables were placed around the room, with four wooden chairs set at each. The floor was also wooden, with a large green rug bearing a woven image of the Last Tree of Aurea taking up most of the area. A bar of light ran around the whole room at around head height, lighting everything evenly.

“Yeeesh,” Kira said, looking around in distaste. “It’s a bit…dull, don’t you think?”

“Don’t forget, my father is a soldier. Anything more than a military barracks is pure luxury to him. Except for his study. My mother chose the furnishings for his study in our home before the exodus, and he’s kept them ever since so he can recreate it exactly wherever we go. Just like she designed it.” Lysander looked wistful for a moment, but then he shrugged. “Anyway, the kitchen’s in here. Come on.”

They passed through a door at the back of the room and found a small but fully fitted kitchen in the hemispherical space.
